Blackberry banned in UAE

This story is not a daring expose of the Arab states hatred of brambles, rather a continuation of an ongoing dispute between the UAE and Research in Motion (RIM) who make the Blackberry smart phones, the arguments have focused around the sending of e-mails and blackberry messenger functions which it is claimed break local laws, specifically that they should be allowed to monitor all communications sent through the device.

This latest part of the dispute follows last years embarrassing incident where they attempted to download spyware onto Blackberries to retrieve the data.

I doubt when push comes to shove however that RIM will give in to demands to hand over details of private communications as although the UAE market is a regional leader it is very small globally and unlikely to be worth the negative effects to the western market of handing private details to a state run organisation.
